Max Poolman, the company’s Special Effects Supervisor and Director, is a qualified pyro technician with over 39 years experience in the features, commercials and TV industry.

Stri Moodley, as Commercial Director, is a qualified attorney with over 20 years of corporate business experience. MXFX is chaired by an independent, non–executive director Wayne Poolman.

Working from a fully equipped, light-engineering workshop and well-stocked SFX store, we are able to design and build complex mechanical rigs, and custom manufacture wind, rain, snow & fire.

Our team of professional SFX technicians and fabricators, enable us to provide world class physical effects and services to our international and local partners.

We are a group of enthusiastic, multitalented individuals who comprise a safe and dynamic team. We are always current with international health and safety trends. Anyway, we’d love to deliver a bit of magic to your set.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The MXFX brand was founded by Max & Karen Poolman. After completing his studies in electronics, Max started his career in ’83 and met Karen, a SFX make-up & prosthetics artist. After attaining ample experience in the special effects world and realizing their love for the art form, Max & Karen opened MXFX’s doors in ’97.

This empire has trained and up-skilled a great number of South African crew; constructed the most exquisite builds; acquired top equipment; executed tremendous amount of features and commercials, locally & abroad; been nominated for a few awards and has won a Primetime Emmy Award.

In 2019, it was time to take MXFX to the next level and so Max & Karen joined forces with corporate business specialist, Stri Moodley, who has brought a business orientated approach to the company. He keeps an eye on the commercial aspects of the business and allows Max to focus on the arts.
